What are the symptoms of Myasthenia Gravis?

Although myasthenia gravis may affect any voluntary muscle, muscles that control eye and eyelid movement, facial expression, the swallowing are most frequently affected. The onset of the disorder may be sudden. Symptoms often are not immediately recognized as myasthenia gravis.

In most cases, the first noticeable symptom is weakness of the eye muscles. In others, difficulty in swallowing and slurred speech may be the first signs. The degree of muscle weakness involved in myasthenia gravis varies greatly among patients, ranging from a localized form, limited to eye muscles (ocular myasthenia), to a severe or generalized form in which many muscles – sometimes including those that control breathing – are affected. Symptoms, which vary in type and severity, may include a drooping of one or both eyelids (ptosis), blurred or double vision (diplopia) due to weakness of the muscles that control eye movements, unstable or waddling gait, weakness in arms, hands, fingers, legs, and neck, a change in facial expression, difficulty in swallowing and shortness of breath, and impaired speech (dysarthria).

It was stated that myasthenia gravis has manifested after exposure to crop sprays with chemicals which have an antagonistic effect on acetyl cholinesterase which is needed for the signal from the nerves to the muscle.  A modern complication is the additional antagonistic action of fluoride on this enzyme. Vitamin B2 is important for tissue respiration, for the storage of glycogen in muscles and liver as well as for the metabolism of glycine, an amino acid linked with myasthenia gravis. Pantothenic acid supplies the acetyl part in the synthesis of acetylcholine. It opposes the effects of substances that are known to block receptors. Vitamin C is another anti-stress vitamin. It is essential for collagen synthesis. Collagen is the connective tissue between muscle cells, cementing them together. Vitamin C is involved with the use of glycogen in muscles, with muscle contractions and exercise tolerance. It affects muscle metabolism and the functioning of muscle membranes. Together with folic acid it is involved with the synthesis of neurotransmitters and steroid hormones. Vitamin B12 and folic acid are required for the synthesis of choline before forming acetylcholine. Vitamin A is needed for the immune system, to produce steroid hormones and to protect the thymus and adrenal glands from the effects of stress.

Vitamin E is important to protect cell membranes from damage through oxidation and peroxidation, while a deficiency causes changes in muscle protein with swelling and fragmentation of individual muscle fibres, leading to muscle weakness, dystrophy and paralysis. Manganese and the Thymus Gland

Manganese and the thymus gland are the keys to the development and treatment of myasthenia gravis.. When muscles are damaged, manganese leaches into the bloodstream and causes its level to rise. Manganese deficiency causes defective growth, muscular weakness, lack of coordination and balance, reproductive abnormalities and disorders of the central nervous system. Manganese is required for a healthy immune system and it is also involved in the synthesis of acetylcholine.

While the thymus gland is best known for its importance in the development and functioning of the immune system, it has also other, less known functions which to some degree are like those of manganese.

In MG, the thymus is generally abnormal, usually much enlarged (hyperplasia) and not infrequently containing tumours (thymomas). Administration of high doses of manganese reportedly causes the thymus to shrink to its normal size in a very short time and thymomas and symptoms of MG to disappear.

The report of his first MG case with this new method is quite instructive. A 43-year-old female developed the symptoms of MG in 1932. She had X-ray treatments for thymoma over many years. Drug treatment was started later but gave only a slight improvement and after some months she failed to respond completely. Nutritional therapy was started in 1937 with high doses of vitamins A, B, and C, along with a high salt intake because of severe adrenal weakness, and glycine, an amino acid important for the muscles. Within three weeks the patient was much improved. The later substitution of part of the salt with potassium chloride caused acute glaucoma and had to be stopped.

After a year the therapy started to become ineffective and the condition deteriorated again. Now vitamin E was added in the form of wheat germ oil. In 1942 manganese sulphate was added to the therapy. Within one week her muscle strength was better than at any time during previous treatments and all symptoms of MG disappeared.  In another case, a young woman developed rapidly progressing MG after her thyroid had been removed because of hyperthyroidism. Within 2 days of starting manganese therapy she showed marked improvement. However, in this case it took two to three years until she was completely well.

Furthermore, a lack of gastric acid leads to reduced mineral absorption, while inorganic (ferric) iron makes manganese unavailable and destroys vitamin E. Also, prolonged use of antibiotics can cause manganese deficiency.

The Diet

Raw-food diets have generally been showing to improve and possibly cure MG. Another excellent food is sprouted seeds. They are high in enzymes and their minerals can easily be absorbed. As salad dressing use lemon juice, extra-virgin olive oil, herbs, spices and possibly the yolk of a free-range egg.  As cooked food use mainly fresh vegetables, arrowroot, sago, tapioca, rice and lentils. Buckwheat flour may be used for binding instead of gluten flour. Instead of cows’ milk use rice milk or almond milk; also, yogurt, cheese or cottage cheese from goats’ milk. Tea leaves and walnuts are high in manganese (15 mg /100 g). Use fruits cautiously before or between meals.

Initially avoid the following foods:

  • Cows’ milk products, except butter;
  • Processed foods with added chemicals, such as colours, flavours, and aspartame;
  • Alcohol, tobacco, chlorinated or fluoridated water or toothpaste;
  • Meat or chicken from feedlots or factory farming;
  • Soy, corn and other genetically modified or microwave-heated food;
  • Wheat products, initially also other gluten grains (oats, rye, barley);
  • Sweeteners and sweetened food; commercial fruit drinks and soft drinks;
  • Fried food, polyunsaturated oils, margarine and other hydrogenated oil or fat;
  • Solvents and household cleaners and exposure to their fumes;
  • Contact with chemicals; pesticides or aerosol sprays around the house.

Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the motor control centre of the developing brain and can occur during pregnancy, during childbirth or after birthing up to about age three.  Sometimes a form of CP may be accompanied by epilepsy marked by muscular impairment. With oxygen, cells can produce 36 types of ATP from 1 molecule of glucose without oxygen; they could only produce 2 types of ATP. To have the ability to maintain sufficient ATP production, cells requires more glucose!

What is Super Gonorrhoea and Should I be Worried?

You may have already heard of the particularly nasty new strain of Gonorrhoea that resists the usual drug treatments available to us. Gonorrhoea can be difficult to identify without professional medical equipment for the first few days after infection, during which, carriers are at risk of transmitting the disease without knowing they are doing so. Atherosclerosis– Normally the inner wall of an artery is smooth and firm, allowing blood to flow freely. Over time, the arteries may develop atherosclerosis, a process commonly called “hardening of the arteries”. During this process, an accumulation of cholesterol or fatty materials causes the inner lining of the artery to become thickened and rough. This build- up, called plaque, may cause the artery to narrow or even close off completely. Aneurysms:   An aneurysm is a dilation or enlargement of an artery segment (like a balloon) that poses a risk due to its potential for rupture, clotting, or dissecting. The rupture of an aneurysm in the brain can cause a stroke, while the rupture of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) may cause severe shock. A ruptured aneurysm in either location can be a life-threatening event.

Peripheral arterial disease is a condition like coronary artery disease and carotid artery disease.  In PAD, fatty deposits build up along artery walls and affect blood circulation, mainly in arteries leading to legs and feet.  In its early stages, a common symptom is cramping or fatigue in the legs and buttocks during activity. People with PAD have a higher risk of death from stroke and heart attack due to the risk of blood clots.

It is believed the condition can begin as early as the teens, taking many years to become noticeable. Inflammation is a primary player in the development of coronary vascular disease. It occurs when white blood cells that normally defend against infection invade and become active in a tissue. Dr. Peter Libby, writing in the journal Circulation, explains that excess LDL particles accumulate in the artery wall and undergo a series of chemical changes. These modified LDLs combine with many other immune cells in the blood–including macrophages, which ingest the oxidized LDLs–producing many inflammatory factors. These fat -laden macrophages accumulate and attach themselves to the inner lining of the artery, initiating the earliest form of the atherosclerotic plaque that will eventually obstruct the flow of blood through the artery.

Hardening of the arteries (arthrosclerosis) is a disorder in which arteries (blood vessels that carry oxygenated blood from the heart to other parts of the body) become narrowed because fat (cholesterol deposits called atherosclerosis) is first deposited on the inside walls of the arteries, then becomes hardened by fibrous tissue and calcification (arteriosclerosis). As this plaque grows, it narrows the lumen of the artery (the space in the artery tubes), thereby reducing both the oxygen and blood supply to the affected organ (like the heart, eyes, kidney, legs, gut, or the brain). The plaque may eventually severely block the artery, causing death of the tissue supplied by the artery, for example, heart attack or stroke.

Motor Neuron Disease and Oxygen Therapy

This is a disorder with an invariably lethal course that is resistant to all possible forms of therapeutic intervention and evokes many theories. At a microscopic level, several cell systems in different organs seem to be affected in ALS, which lends support to the concept of ALS as a multi system disorder. Neurodegenerative disorders account for an increasing morbidity worldwide.

Motor neurons control muscle movements, breathing, speaking, chewing and swallowing. The upper motor neurons, located in the brain, send nerve impulses to the lower motor neurons in the brain stem and spinal cord.

The single most telling symptoms is not really the weakness of the arms and the legs. For some reason it effects the speech (as in speaking loudly) then followed by a gradual weakening of arms, or legs, whichever, they attack the motor neurons.

Motor Neurone Disease (MND) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease. Degeneration of the motor neurones leads to weakness and wasting of muscles, causing increasing loss of mobility in the limbs, and difficulties with speech, swallowing and breathing. Patients may present with symptoms as diverse as a dragging foot, unilateral muscle wasting in the hands, or slurred speech.  Signs and symptoms of ALS are very subtle at the beginning. The condition starts in one part of the body, gradually spreading to other parts until the entire body becomes paralyzed. Initial signs include the weakening of extremities such as the legs and hands, causing clumsiness and instability. People with these symptoms usually trip or fall a lot and often drop things as well. As the disease progresses, symptoms include muscle twitching and cramping, resulting in terrible fatigue. Finally, paralysis sets in, impairing walking, eating, and breathing.

It is important to realise not every symptom you experience will be caused by MND.

Types of Motor Neuron Disease

Progressive muscular atrophy (PMA): this is a less common form of MND and tends to progress more slowly than ALS. People with PMA do not experience muscle spasms. Some people with PMA go on to develop ALS. ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is the most common form and accounts for approximately 60% to 70% of all cases.

Progressive bulbar palsy (PBP): this form of MND mainly affects the muscles in the throat, tongue and face and causes difficulties with speech, swallowing, coughing and clearing the throat. PBP can also affect the expression of emotions and people might laugh or cry for no apparent reason. This is called emotional labiality. PBP (progressive bulbar palsy) accounts for about 20% of all cases.

Primary lateral sclerosis (PLS): this is a very rare form of MND in which people experience spasticity but do not experience muscle wasting. PMA (progressive muscular atrophy) accounts for the remaining 10% of cases.

In all three MND forms symptoms are very similar. However, they progress at different speeds. PLS (primary lateral sclerosis) is a very rare form of MND. PLS, unlike the other forms, is not fatal. In some very rare cases, patients with PLS eventually have ALS.

MND can affect patients of any age, but most of them develop the disease and are affected by it after the age of 40 (specifically between the ages of 50 and 70 years). Out of every 10 people with AMD 6 are men and 4 are women.

What are the risk factors for motor neuron disease?

A risk factor is something that increases a person’s chances of developing a disease. For example, smoking increases the risk of developing some types of cancer; therefore, smoking is a risk factor for cancer.

  • Heredity – approximately 1 in every 10 people with ALS in the USA are known to have inherited it from their parents. A child who has a parent with MND has a 50% chance of developing the disease.
  • Age – after the age of 40 the risk of developing MND rises significantly (but is still very small).
  • Sex – men are much more likely to develop the disease before the age of 65 than women. After 70 years of age the risk is the same for both sexes.
  • Where you live – incidence of MND is significantly higher in parts of Japan, West New Guinea and Guam, compared to other parts of the world (even so, the risk is still small in those areas).
  • Military experience – some studies have suggested that people who are or have been in the military (army, navy, air force, marines) have a higher chance of developing the disease than other people.

Symptoms:

  • Pain – Pain and discomfort are not caused directly by the MND but may have several indirect causes. Your GP should be able to prescribe a suitable painkiller.
  • Muscle cramps and spasms – May be relieved by changing position when relaxing in a chair or bed alternatively, your doctor may be able to provide a muscle relaxant.

What causes motor neurons to die?

Painstaking research has provided evidence of disruption to many processes within the cellular infrastructure of motor neurones and their support cells.

Tests and investigations

When people first notice symptoms developing, they usually visit their GP who can refer them to a neurologist or other specialist. MND cannot be diagnosed with one specific hospital test and doctors will usually carry out a series of tests and investigations. The symptoms of MND are like those of other conditions that need to be ruled out as part of the process. The first stages of a diagnosis of MND will involve checking your medical history and carrying out a thorough neurological examination. If the neurologist finds motor neuron signs in at least three regions of the patient’s body a definite MND diagnosis can be made.

Electromyography (EMG)

An EMG examination is used to measure the extent of damage to the motor neurones transmitting messages to a muscle. Small needles are used to record the amount of nerve impulse activity in the muscle. A variation of the EMG test called a nerve conduction test can also be used to measure the speed at which messages (nerve impulses) are travelling via nerves to muscles. The results are checked for any abnormalities.

An EMG (electromyography) – needles are used to measure the electrical activity in the patient’s muscles. A fine wire electrode is inserted into the muscles that the doctor wants to study – usually muscles from each limb and the bulbar (throat). An instrument records the electrical activity or the muscle while it is resting and contracting. Most patients find this test mildly uncomfortable. Muscles which have lost their nerve supply can be identified because their electrical activity is different from healthy muscle. The EMG may appear as abnormal even if that muscle is not yet affected.

A nerve conduction test – measures how fast the nerves can conduct an electrical impulse. Electrodes are attached to the skin above the nerve or muscle that is being studied. A small electric shock is passed through the nerve to measure the strength and velocity of the nerve signals.

Trans cranial magnetic stimulation (TMS)

A TMS examination uses a special magnetic coil to measure motor neurone activity in the brain (the activity of the upper motor neurones). The results are checked for any abnormalities. TMS – the activity of the upper motor neurons is measured using a specially designed magnetic coil. This procedure may be carried out at the same time as a nerve conduction test.

Spinal tap (lumbar puncture) – the aim here is to analyse the cerebrospinal fluid; the fluid that surrounds the brain and spinal cord. Patients lie on their side with knees drawn up to the chest. A local anaesthetic is injected into the area where the spinal tap occurs. A needle is then inserted into the spinal canal and some fluid is collected.

Muscle biopsy – if the doctor thinks the patient may have a muscle disease, rather than MND, a muscle biopsy may be performed. A small portion of muscle is removed. The patient receives a local anaesthetic beforehand. The muscle sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis.

More recent evidence indicates that the nervous system’s immune cells, microglia, are heavily involved in the later stages of the disease. What is clear, however, is that severe damage to motor neurons is caused by the action of free radicals and clogged mitochondria

MRI Scan

An MRI scan (Magnetic Resonance Imaging scan) produces detailed pictures of the brain and spinal cord using strong magnetic fields and radio waves. The scan cannot confirm whether you have MND but it can help doctors rule out other conditions which could potentially be causing your symptoms. An MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) scan – radio waves and a powerful magnetic field produce detailed images of the brain and spinal cord on a monitor. The patient lies on a movable bed that slides into a tube-shaped machine. When the machine is switched on and the patient is inside he/she will hear loud thumping and banging noises – this is normal. An MRI scan will not diagnose MND – damage caused by MND does not show up on an MRI. However, it is a useful test in ruling out damage caused by other conditions and diseases which do show up, such as stroke, Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson’s disease, and others.

Blood Tests

Blood tests cannot confirm whether you have MND but they are carried out to rule out other conditions that might be causing your symptoms, such as kidney or liver disease, problems with the thyroid gland, or inflammatory conditions such as lupus. A blood test can also determine whether there is any rise in creatinine kinase, which can sometimes be found in the blood of patients with MND. Creatinine kinase is not specific for MND and may also be an indicator of some other medical condition. Creatinine kinase is produced when muscle breaks down.

What are the treatments?

Unfortunately, there is no cure for MND. However, there are different treatments available. Some aim to slow the progress of the condition and others aim to treat your specific symptoms and improve your quality of life.

Alternative treatments, also known as unproven treatments, may appear to offer some hope. Those offering these treatments suggest that they will work better than Riluzole, claiming that they can cure MND or significantly slow disease progression. Examples of unproven treatments include: stem cell therapy, snake venom treatment and ‘detox’ regimes. Spinal cord ischemia sometimes causes paraplegia because the spinal motor neuron cells are vulnerable to ischemia. Although various protective remedies for spinal cord injury have been reported, there have been few established clinical methods. Although hyperbaric oxygen (HBO) has been used clinically as a treatment for ischemia, the reason for its effectiveness is still uncertain because sufficient experimental data is lacking.

Scientists are not sure why motor neurons start to lose function. They believe several inter-related factors cause MND, including:

  • Excess glutamate – glutamate is a neurotransmitter, a messenger chemical that transmits data from cell-to-cell. Some studies indicate that people with MND have too much glutamate. Abnormally high levels of glutamate may be toxic and could lead to a disturbance in the chemical communication required for good nerve function.
  • Cell metabolism – transport systems exist in all cells that bring nutrients and chemical components into the cell, while at the same time moving waste products out. Scientists say there are indications that these transport systems are disturbed in the motor neurons during the initial stages of MND., resulting in poor nerve function.
  • Aggregates – unusual clumps of protein molecules have been found to accumulate in the motor neurons of MND patients. Scientists believe these aggregates undermine the normal functioning of motor neurons.
  • Lack of antioxidant production – research indicates that the motor neurons of patients with MND do not produce enough antioxidants to neutralize the free radicals that emerge as a natural by-product of cell activity. Oxygen free radicals are a type of toxic waste cells produce – antioxidants mop them up.
  • Mitochondria of motor neurons – research has found that the mitochondria of motor neuron cells of people with MND appear to be abnormal. Mitochondria provide the energy cells need to carry out their normal function – they are normal structures responsible for energy production in cells.
  • Neurotropic factors – these are molecules, usually proteins, that facilitate the growth or repair of nerve cells. It has been found that neurotropic factors are not produced properly in patients with MND, making the motor neurons more susceptible to damage.
  • Glia cells – these cells surround neurons and provide support for them and insulation between them. They also provide motor neurons with nutrients and relay data from one cell to another. In some cases, problems with glia cells can affect the motor neurons.

A new study out of Boston University and the Veterans Administration, published in the Journal of Neuropathology & Experimental Neurology, offers “the first pathological evidence that repetitive head trauma experienced in collision sports might be associated with the development of a motor neuron disease.” The same kinds of head trauma have become the signature injury of troops in Iraq and Afghanistan. Resulting memory problems may be misdiagnosed as Alzheimer’s disease as well.

Malaria … A Neglected Tropical Disease

Malaria is an important global health issue, killing nearly one million people worldwide each year. There is a disproportionate disease burden, since 89% of cases are of African origin, and 85% of deaths worldwide occur in children under 5 years of age of age. Cerebral malaria (CM) is the most serious complication of infection.

Malaria, caused by the plasmodium parasite, remains endemic in many Third World countries. 1,600 million people are at risk of infection with malaria worldwide, whilst 396 million people (of which 275 million in Africa) suffers from the disease. The World Health Organisation estimates that almost 2.8 million people, most of whom are children under five, die from the disease every year. Malaria, an infection caused by parasites that invade liver and red blood cells, is transmitted to humans by the female mosquito. Malaria is one of the leading infectious diseases worldwide, affecting more than 400 million people and causing more than 2 million deaths each year, mainly among African children.

Malaria is a devastating infectious disease transmitted by mosquitoes and caused by infection with small one-celled parasites of the Plasmodium genus. The parasites destroy host red blood cells, resulting in anemia, fever, and chills. The illness is a driving force for human evolution and has changed the course of history on many occasions. Even today, with recent and profound understanding of the vector and the pathogen, the disease causes an estimated 2 million deaths every year; hundreds of millions more are infected with the parasite but do not die from the disease.

The parasite has a complicated life cycle, which begins in the mosquito’s gut before moving to the salivary glands, where it awaits transfer to the next host. Once in a human’s bloodstream, the parasite lodges in the liver, burrowing into cells where it feasts and multiplies. After a week or two the plasmodia burst out-around 40,000 replications for each parasite that entered the body. Next, they target red blood cells, this time repeatedly, until there are billions of parasites in circulation. If this cycle isn’t checked, the body starts to fail, because with so many oxygen-carrying red cells are destroyed there are too few left to sustain vital organs. Meanwhile, all it takes for the parasite to pass on its grim legacy is for another mosquito to stop off for a meal.

The parasites enter a person’s blood in the saliva of an infected Anopheles mosquito when the insect bites its victim. The parasites then invade the liver cells of their host, where they reproduce, and later enter the red blood cells. Inside the red blood cells the parasites continue to multiply. The blood cells eventually burst open, releasing the new parasites, which can then infect more red blood cells. Infected red blood cells all open at about the same time, releasing toxins that cause the victim to experience the chills, fever, headache and muscle pain. Malaria is a major global health problem, with 300 million to 500 million new cases and more than 2 million deaths each year. In much of Africa and more than 25 percent of all hospital visits are due to malaria.

Through extensive research carried out on one of the world’s fastest supercomputers at the National Institute for Computational Sciences, Karniadakis and colleagues found that malaria-infected red blood cells stiffened as much as 50 times more than healthy red blood cells. The result: Infected red blood cells, having lost their elasticity, could no longer pass through capillaries, effectively blocking them.

Malaria is commonly associated with poverty, but is also a cause of poverty and a major hindrance to economic development. The parasites destroy so many oxygen-carrying red cells that too few are left to sustain vital functions. The lungs fight for breath, and the heart struggles to pump. The blood acidifies. Brain cells die. The person struggles and convulses and finally falls into a coma.

Falciparum Malaria:  It is the most dangerous kind of malaria, where the parasite infects the red blood cells, causes them to sludge, and then form areas of dead tissue (as the parasite cuts off the oxygen supply to the organs). In fact, historians believe that the downfall of the Roman Empire relates to falciparum malaria.

Malaria can result in anemia (a decreased number or red blood cells). The remains of the destroyed red blood cells clump together and cause blockages in the blood vessels. This can result in brain damage or kidney damage, which is potentially fatal. Symptoms, which appear 8 to 30 days after transmission, include fever, headache, vomiting and muscle ache. The parasite’s cycles of multiplication a destruction of red blood cells is often reflected by cycles of fever, shaking chills, drenching sweats… By this point, the fever has reached maximum intensity. The body is practically boiling itself to death-anything to halt the attack-but to no avail. The parasites can even commandeer blood cells to help aid their survival. In some cases, infected cells sprout Velcro-like knobs on their surfaces, and as these cells pass through the capillaries of the brain, they latch to the sides. The adhesion keeps them from washing into the spleen, which cleans the blood by shredding damaged cells. Somehow-no one is quite sure how-the adhesion also causes the brain to swell. The infection has turned into cerebral malaria, the most feared manifestation of the disease.

As a result, Malaria patients become severely anaemic and suffer from symptoms related to insufficient oxygen delivery. The researchers also found that infected red blood cells had a tendency to stick, flip, and flop along the walls of blood vessels – unlike healthy blood cells that flow in the middle of the channel..

The Immunology Department from Middlesex Hospital Medical School, London, issued a report in June 1982 that Lethal and non-lethal Plasmodium were killed with oxygen therapy treatment. HIV and AIDS: Treatment and Healthy Living

For nearly half a century, HIV and AIDS have infected and destroyed the lives of countless people, but after decades of experience fighting this terrible disease, humankind has learned that the onset of AIDS can be delayed and resisted, and that an HIV diagnosis is not a death sentence. Despite this, many people who are diagnosed with HIV still struggle with feelings of fear and depression, and do not take care of themselves properly as a result. In addition, sufferers of HIV and AIDS are often made victims of unfair stigmas by the uninformed, leading to the patient hiding their disease and failing to effectively treat it or prevent it from spreading further.

Of course, the first step in stopping HIV in its tracks is preventing it from spreading further, and until an effective vaccine against HIV is discovered, the closest thing we can use and share to save ourselves and each-other from HIV/AIDS is knowledge of the prevention techniques already proven to work. HIV and Aids Symptoms

First things first: As you probably already know, HIV is only transmitted through human bodily fluids, especially the blood, so limiting contact between open wounds or bodily fluids of people whose HIV status is Positive or uncertain is the cornerstone of preventing HIV from spreading. One cannot catch HIV from coughs, sneezes or other respiratory symptoms, but since other opportunistic diseases like tuberculosis (TB) often take up residence in HIV patients, steering clear of the flying mucous expelled by these symptoms is still a wise move. So what kind of contact does put us at risk?

HIV and Aids is famously known as a sexually transmitted disease, though it’s important to remember that not all sexual or physical contact puts one at the same risk of HIV transmission. As a rule of thumb, remember that the single most risky factor in HIV transmission is when an uninfected person’s open wound meets bodily fluids of an infected person. When there aren’t any open wounds in the equation, the risk of catching HIV is actually very low. For example, kissing, hugging and most other physical contact is completely safe if neither person has an open sore or wound that meets blood from the other person, but if the uninfected person has an open sore or wound, their risk skyrockets. The conditionally low risk of kissing applies to oral sex as well, but with an overall higher risk of HIV transmission, since genital fluids tend to have far higher concentrations of the HIV virus than saliva.

Unprotected penetrative sex is widely known as a high-risk factor when it comes to catching HIV. Even if no-one involved in the encounter has open wounds on or around their genitals when they start, the friction of penetrative sex, particularly unlubricated anal sex, is likely to result in tiny cuts and abrasions that, while not particularly painful or noticeable, nevertheless become high-risk factors as the new wounds encounter each-other. Using an ample amount of water-based lubrication during penetrative sex can minimise this risk, but extra protection is still a good idea when there’s even the remotest chance that one sexual partner is HIV positive.

While the most watertight preventative measure against HIV transmission is to abstain from intense and/or penetrative sex with HIV-positive partners (getting and insisting on HIV testing before having sex with new partners is a requirement for this method), personal factors mean this may not always be an option. While penetrative sex will never be completely free of risk, there are many effective precautions one can take to minimise the danger of catching HIV.

As you may have guessed, minimising the chance of fluid-to-fluid contact is the most effective precautionary measure. Using a latex condom or similarly reliable physical barrier (such as a dental dam for oral sex), as well as ample lubrication, between the points of friction for any given sexual act serves the dual purpose of keeping otherwise exposed areas away from potentially infectious fluids, and reducing the chance of cuts and abrasions that could lead to infection in the future.

Outside of sexual contact, the most common way for HIV to spread is by multiple people being injected by the same hypodermic needle without sterilising it between uses. This is most common amongst groups of people sharing injected recreational drugs such as heroin and methamphetamines, but medical facilities that neglect to live up to basic hygiene standards can be responsible for accidental HIV infections too. If you are about to take or administer an injection with a used needle, be sure that the needle is either completely sterilised or preferably replaced by an unused needle.

Unfortunately, while all these precautions reduce your chances of catching HIV to almost nothing, accidents or lapses can happen that may put you in danger of contracting the disease. If you have even the slightest suspicion that you’ve been exposed to HIV (be it from unprotected sexual contact with someone of unknown HIV status – perhaps the result of a broken condom, getting pricked by a used needle, etc.) check in with a local health professional equipped to administer HIV tests immediately. If your HIV test comes back positive after the first test, this doesn’t necessarily mean that the infection will stick. While it is currently not possible to completely remove a fully-formed HIV infection, a strong immune system slows the rate that HIV multiplies and in some cases, even forces it to evolve into a milder, less deadly form (You can read more about this effect at http://www.bbc.com/news/health-30254697), and if you begin medical treatment right away, the HIV infection can be purged altogether. HIV might be characterised by its ability to damage and weaken the immune system over time, but your immune system is still your first line of defence against it if you are exposed, and can prevent HIV from ever gaining a foothold.

While preventing exposure altogether is the best ‘cure’ for HIV, having a strong immune system might be the factor tipping the odds of staying HIV-free (and free of any other illness for that matter) in your favour.
